We bought this following a Hackspace member request for something to help with assembling and inspecting surface mount PCBs . After reviewing a number of different system we came across the introductory offer to the Elektor version of the AndonstarAD409 Pro ES which looked to be an excellent value deal.
Having ordered the unit it was delivered quickly with minimal fuss including sorting out VAT/duty through DPD.
Unpacking and assembling the unit it went together really easily. The only minor issue being the need to firmly seat the 3.5mm jack for the endoscope connection. If you find the endoscope doesn`t seem to be working or its LEDs are a bit dim give the connector a firmer push in to the socket.
The magnification figure originally stated of a whopping 300X, now clarified on the product page, is quite misleading. In order to achieve this massive magnification you will need to hook the unit up to a bigger screen 27` monitor. The 300x magnification is because you have a bigger image. Not because that is what the optics are capable of. Putting a steel rule under the main camera and measuring the image on the 10` screen gives a more sensible range of magnification figure of between ~9 and 18 times depending on your adjustment and focusing. Just what you need for PCB work.
The HDMI works well with an additional monitor or projector. It allows you to share what someone is working on or demonstrating with others on a bigger screen. Rather than all having to crowd round the device`s screen.
The measuring software, available by plugging the unit in to a PC with the supplied USB lead, Isn`t the greatest but it is functional and useable allowing measurements to be taken. It may be worth investing in a precision graticule slide for calibrating on screen measurements.
All in all a very good value bit of kit and a welcome addition to our hackspace`s equipment.
